Prosthetics are a necessity for many individuals, but creating one can be a time-consuming and extremely expensive process. Many patients must travel long distances for the tedious,
week-long process of developing their prosthetic.
Initially, sockets were forged by creating a reverse plaster mold from plaster bandages wrapped around the amputee’s limb. With the advancements in 3D printing technology, medical experts have developed a method where a fully customizable prosthetic may be designed without the patient leaving their home. 3D printed prosthetics begin by scanning the amputee’s limb to produce a 3D image.
Next, the image is translated into a custom-designed 3D model and then transferred to a 3D printing facility to be manufactured. Once the process is complete, the prosthetic is shipped back for the amputee’s final fitting.
3D printed prosthetics are lighter than previous models, allowing amputees more mobility and flexibility. They have been shown to improve posture, balance, and daily life.
3D printing enables the patient to be more involved in the building of their prosthetic. Customizations such as colors, designs, padding, etc. are faster, less expensive, and more reliable with 3D printing.
