An Alternative to the REAL ID: A Passport Card

Struggling to get a REAL ID appointment?
A passport card might be a good alternative

Starting May 7, 2025, all domestic commercial flights will require a form of REAL ID compliant identification for passengers 18 years or older. Passport books and passport cards both fall into this category. The U.S. passport card is a wallet-sized, plastic passport that can be used as proof of U.S. citizenship and identity.  If you already have a passport book, you do not need a passport card; it is just an easier-to-carry option. Passport cards can be used for domestic flights in place of Real ID, or international by land or sea. They cannot be used for international air travel. 

To get a passport card, you can apply the same way you would for a regular passport book. Or, if you have a passport book and just want the card, you can apply for a renewal. A new card will costs $65. The fee for a renewal is $30. Keep in mind that the processing time is about 4 to 6 weeks, so plan accordingly if you are traveling in the near future.
